A rich history

The Club is Born

Golf came to Ballynahinch in the spring of 1907 when a small group of local enthusiasts decided to form a Club as the popularity of the sport continued to grow in Ireland and across Europe.

Ballynahinch was established as a thriving market town, and the nearby village of Spa was long known for its famous wells. It was felt a golf course, or Links as it was then called, would be beneficial to both.

According to the first official club records, a public meeting was held at the Court House on February 1st, 1907, "for the purpose of a Golf Club at the Spa." Spa Golf Club was officially opened on April 27, 1907. Captain David Kerr of Montalto Estate was the first Captain, and Miss Dorothy Hurst hit the first ball off the tee.

The club's standing was confirmed on May 28, 1907, when the Golf Union of Ireland unanimously agreed to affiliate Spa Golf Club.

Continued Growth &
The Relocation

The club continued to develop its facilities, with a pavilion for members opened on Saturday, October 11, 1913, which underwent significant modernisation in 1927.

However, as far back as 1947, the guardians of the Club wrestled with the mounting problems over the renewal of leases and rising costs involved. This mounting challenge led to a pivotal decision: in 1967, the Club relocated to its present location.

The new course, consisting of nine holes, was officially opened by Lord Clanwilliam on Saturday, September 30, 1967.

The course continued to mature, and in 1989 it finally graduated to its current scale of 18 holes, par 72.

The Modern Era

A key landmark in the club's history occurred in 2003, which was a memorable year when the new, present-day clubhouse opened.

Spa Golf Club now provides a first-class facility in both golf and hospitality, where everyone is welcome.

This modern clubhouse caters for private functions including birthdays, christenings, and weddings, ensuring the club is a central destination for both golfers and the wider community.
